What is a Gas cooker?

A gas cooker refers to a freestanding unit that incorporates a single or double oven with a hob. Another variation of a freestanding gas cooker can be one that includes a high level grill. Whilst gas cookers now incorporate electrics within (mainly for timers and ignitions), they are generally supplied wired in with plugs. This allows our gas safe registered engineers to competently install them. However dual fuel cookers can be a combination of both electric and gas (typically a gas hob and an electric oven). Due to the power consumption the electric aspect of this cooker needs to be fitted by a qualified electrician in accordance with IEE regualtions. Some of our engineers are both Safe Registered and qualified electrician, this reduces the need for two engineers attending to install a dual fuel cooker. Whilst

What are the advantages of fitting a gas hob?

Gas hobs are relatively simple and robust appliances that effectively just create a controllable cooking flame. Standalone units are typically good value for money and are usually packaged with an electric single built in oven. This provides the end user the flexibility of having an available cooking appliance in the vent of disruption to the gas or electric supply.

What is a Gas Oven?

Gas ovens refer to built in ovens that are typically fitted within your kitchen cabinets. Depending on your current layout or requirements there are two choices and sizes,

Single built in ovens

Double built in ovens

What is the difference between a fan assisted oven and a conventional oven?

In addition to the tow types of ovens listed above both single and double ovens can have further variations. The two options available on the market are fan assisted and conventional ovens. Whilst there may be pros and cons to both types to consider when purchasing the main difference it can be simplified by one factor.

As implied by the name fan assisted ovens utilise the power of an internal fan to circulate the heat therefore reducing cooking time and increasing the efficiency whilst a conventional oven just heats from within. Fan assisted ovens tend to be more expensive to purchase but there is payback in the energy consumed. We apply a standard installation cost to both as there is no significant difference in the installation as both are generally supplied with a plug and do not require additional wiring.

What are the restrictions for fitting a cooker?

Neither free-standing or built-in ranges may be placed anywhere. There are regulations in place to protect you and your home from potential hazards posed by the heat and fire of the appliance. Our Gas Safe Registered  will not install an appliance if there isn’t enough room for it or if it doesn’t fulfil the following standards:

When installing a high-level grill freestanding cooker, you need at least 610 mm of clearance above.

If you’re installing a new gas cooker, you must have at least 20 millimetres clearance on either side.

The minimum distance required between a gas burner and a cooker hood is 750 mm.

Cooker hoods require a minimum height of 366 mm above the hob, and the cabinets on either side of the range should be installed at that height.

There must be a “Flame Supervision Device” in every newly fitted gas appliance. A gas burner’s flame detector is a factory-installed component. It is a safety device that recognises when flame is extinguished and the gas supply is cut off immediately. All modern gas cookers come equipped with this feature as standard. But it requires a thorough inspection by an engineer to ensure its operating correctly

What documentation will I receive after the Gas Cooking Appliance installation.

The type of installation your engineer performed in your property will determine whether or not you receive documentation.

The Building Regulations do not require your Gas Safe registered engineer to notify the installation of a new gas hob, cooker or gas oven. The homeowner will receive a Declaration of Safety Certification if the Gas Safe registered engineer notifies the gas hob, cooker or oven, but this is not a regulatory requirement.

There is one exception, and that is gas-fired range cookers with a flue. If you have one of these installed, your engineer should notify the Local Authority, but it is your responsibility to ensure that this is done. After notification, the Building Regulations Certificate should arrive within 10-15 working days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install my own gas cooker?

No. A cooker is classed as a Gas Appliance and only a Gas Safe licensed engineer is allowed to legally install your cooker. It is illegal to work on any kind of gas without first proving your competence, per the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. Before receiving a licence, you must complete an approved training programme and demonstrate competence through testing.  Although in many cases especially in free standing cookers where only a gas hose connection is required it may seem a simple and harmless task to do, however we have attended many gas leaks that have occurred from such connections. All our installations are tested and accompanied by a gas safety report.

Can you disconnect a gas cooker yourself?

No. Closing the isolation valve and removing the bayonet fitting may appear like an easy task, but they are not. After sealing off the gas line, safety checks should still be performed. As a result, having a Gas Safe engineer handle any maintenance or repairs on your gas appliances is mandatory by law and highly recommended for safety reasons.

What is a gas cooker bayonet fitting?

A gas cooker bayonet fitting is a gas connection that seals itself when not in use and disconnected. On the end of the flexible hose coming from the cooking appliance is a nozzle with lugs that look like a bayonet light bulb fitting. This is the end of the term “male.”

The part of the connection that is called “female” connects to the main gas line that is fixed to the wall. By default, the pressure of the gas inside the pipe is enough to keep the female part of the connection shut.

After connection or disconnection to a bayonet fitting a gas test should be carried out to ensure the bayonet has not failed and functioning correctly

Are new gas cookers and ovens supplied with a hose?

New gas appliances are not usually supplied with a hose and if they are, these are not attached . This is because the joints can loosen during transport and should be checked by a Gas Engineer prior to being commissioned. Commissioning an appliance will also include checking functionality of burners, operating pressures etc.

A gas appliance has been removed. Can I cap off the pipe myself?

A gas pipe should only be terminated or capped off by a Gas Safe Registered Engineer. Our engineers will only use approved fittings and will test the installation to ensure there are no issues or gas leaks.

Are all gas cooker hoses the same?

There are two main types of cooker hoses, Natural Gas and LPG. Typically they can be recognised by distinctive colours. Natural gas has a yellow label while LPG hose is identified by a red label. Both these gas operate at different densities and pressures therefore the hoses are produced according to different standards and specifications.

Do all gas cookers need to be fitted with a safety chain?

It’s critical to secure your cooker to the wall for safety reasons, especially if you have children.

• The safety chain will keep the cooker from tipping over.

• It will also prevent hot pans on the cooker from sliding off and injuring bystanders.

• Finally, the easily detached clip allows the cooker to be pulled away from the wall for cleaning.

What are the advantages of cooking with Gas vs Electric?

Instant heat and easier to control – The temperature can be controlled instantaneously with gas where as electric cookers especially hobs do not provide that level of control and take longer to get to desired temperature.

Running cost – Historically cooking with gas has been a more efficient and cheaper method. However with continuing rise in price of gas this may eventually even out.

What are the typical Gas cooker running costs?

One of the primary advantages of using gas cookers is that they are frequently less expensive to operate than electric cookers. Although in the current climate it is difficult to set a monetary value to it, for now gas cooker costs seem to be cheaper than electric. There is however every possibility with the continuing rise in cost of gas that may one day change. They are also very popular because they provide easily manageable, instantly adjustable heat. Butane/propane may be less cost effective than electric cookers when purchased in smaller quantities, so do your research and explore your options.

Do Gas cookers, ovens and hobs need Servicing?

As with any gas appliance in your property, making sure your gas cooker, oven or hob is properly maintained is critical to keeping it in good working order, not only for efficiency but also to keep the occupants safe.

Aside from proper cleaning, gas hobs don’t usually require much more in terms of routine maintenance, but it’s important to check the manufacturer’s guidelines to find out how frequently a service is recommended. Gas cookers and ovens require a bit more in terms of servicing requirements. You should always refer to your manufacturer’s requirements who recommend that you have your gas appliance serviced once a year by a gas safe registered engineer.

What happens during a gas cooking appliance safety check?

A Gas Safe registered engineer will inspect your gas oven, cooker, and hob during a gas safety check to ensure they are safe to use in your home. They will ensure that the gas is burning properly, that the appliance is secure, that the pipework is securely connected, that it is not worn or damaged, and that it is properly located. The engineer will also examine the ventilation requirements for safety and user comfort.

While an annual gas safety check is always a good idea to ensure your gas cooking appliance remains efficient and safe to use, you may encounter specific problems that require the services of a qualified Gas Safe registered appliance specialist.

Signs of an unsafe gas cooker or hob

Certain symptoms may indicate that your gas cooker or gas hob is unsafe. Keep an eye out for:

  • A floppy yellow flame inside the oven or around the hob ring rather than a crisp blue one
  • A strong gas smell
  • Brown or black marks around the gas appliance

If you notice any of these symptoms, you should have your gas cooking appliance checked and serviced as soon as possible by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

It is critical to act quickly because a gas cooking appliance that has been improperly installed, repaired, or maintained can emit dangerous levels of carbon monoxide (CO). CO is a poisonous gas that is produced when natural gas or LPG is burned. These normally low, safe levels of CO can rise to dangerous levels if the appliance fails to burn properly, and it’s especially dangerous because you can’t see, taste, or smell it.

What safety features should a gas cooker have?

To help prevent accidents and injuries, a gas cooker should have several safety features. A flame failure device, which cuts off the gas supply if the flame goes out, and an automatic ignition system, which allows the burner to be lit without the use of a match or lighter, are two examples. A child lock, which prevents children from accessing the controls, and an overheating protection system, which shuts off the appliance if it becomes too hot, are two other safety features that may be included.

What is a flame failure device and how does it work?

A flame failure device is a safety feature that shuts off the gas supply if the flame on the gas burner goes out. This aids in the prevention of gas leaks and other accidents. Typically, flame failure devices detect the presence of a flame using a thermocouple or other sensing device. If the flame goes out, the device will turn off the gas supply.
