What causes taps to leak?

In and around London the presence of limescale in our experience is the most common cause of leaks. This occurs especially around the hot valve or outlet. The build up of limescale around the washers can prevent from the complete closure of the valve resulting in a leak. Other factors can also be physical/accidental damage or over usage which can wear the internal components

Is it best to replace the entire tap or just the tap heads/valves?

Where possible we carry out and recommend replacement of the internal components of the taps rather than entire units. This can significantly save on time and therefore labour cost.

In addition there are savings on the material costs as these components are usually cheaper than a whole unit but they can be difficult to identify and source as there are large variety manufacturers, makes and models.

In the case of concealed shower valves replacing the entire unit may mean damage to surrounding tiles, replacing the unit and retiling which in itself can cause further issues e.g. sourcing matching tiles. In instances where we notice physical damage to the unit or signs of rust or corrosion we would recommend a complete replacement
