A gas leak inspection is detection of a gas leak from a property’s gas supply and appliances. It is important to have a gas leak inspection carried out by a Gas Safe Registered to ensure the safety of the property’s occupants and the general public.

Gas leaks can lead to explosions and fires, which can cause injury, damage to property and even death. Carbon monoxide poisoning is also a risk from faulty gas appliances and a gas leak inspection can identify any issues that could pose a risk.

What will be checked during a Gas Leak Inspection ?

  • The gas supply and pipework will be checked for any signs of damage or corrosion.
  • All gas appliances, including boilers, ovens, and cookers, will be checked for safety
  • The flues and ventilation systems of gas appliances will be inspected to ensure that they are working safely and are free of any obstructions.
  • The safety devices of gas appliances will be tested and checked to make sure they are operating correctly.
  • Any potential hazards, such as gas leaks, will be identified and remedied.

Gas Leak Inspection Checklist for Property Owners and Tenants:

To ensure an effective and efficient gas leak inspection by our gas safe registered engineers it is important to prepare in advance. Here are some key points to note before the arrival of the Gas Safe Registered engineer:

  • Before the gas engineer arrives, open windows and doors to ventilate the property and expel any gas that may be present.
  • Do not smoke, light any matches or candles or use any electrical appliances until the gas engineer has assessed the situation and declared it safe
  • Avoid using any gas appliances, such as cooker, hobs or ovens until the gas leak has been repaired
  • If you smell gas, do not try to locate the source of the leak yourself. 
  • If you are unable to leave the property, turn off the gas supply at the main shut-off valve and wait for the gas engineer to arrive.
  • If you hear a hissing or whistling sound near a gas appliance, shut off the gas supply immediately.
  • Never attempt to repair a gas leak yourself. Only a qualified gas engineer should perform gas leak repairs.
  • Follow the gas engineer’s instructions and evacuate the property if they advise you to do so.
