PAT Testing checklist,  Prepare for your PAT Inspection

What is PAT Testing?

PAT Testing (Portable Appliance Testing) is a process that involves the inspection and testing of portable electrical appliances to ensure that they are safe to use. PAT Testing is carried out by a qualified PAT Tester who will check the electrical safety of the appliances and issue a certificate to the property owner.

Why is PAT Testing required?

PAT Testing is a legal requirement for landlords and businesses who have portable electrical appliances in their properties. PAT Testing helps to ensure that the appliances are safe for use and reduces the risk of fire or electric shock hazards. By having a PAT Test landlords and businesses can demonstrate that they are taking the necessary steps to keep their tenants and employees safe.

What will be checked during the PAT Testing?

During a PAT Testing, the following will be checked:

• The condition of the portable electrical appliances including the wiring, plugs and leads.

• The operation of the appliances including the earth continuity and insulation resistance.

• The safety of the appliances including the protection against electric shock and fire hazards.

• The compliance of the appliances with the current regulations and standards such as correct fuses

• The overall condition of the appliances including visible wear and tear and any potential hazards.

Pre-Inspection Checklist for Property Owners, Tenants and Businesses:

To ensure a smooth PAT Testing of your portable electrical appliances it is important to prepare in advance. Here are some key points to keep in mind before the arrival of the PAT tester.

  • All portable appliances which require testing must be in full working order, be wired and have a plug.
  • Appliances must be turned off and unplugged to be tested
  • Pay-as-you-go or prepayment electric meters must have enough credit in order for the engineer to conduct the test
  • Full access to the appliance plug is required in order to carry out the test
  • Make sure that all portable electrical appliances are easily accessible and free from any obstructions.
  • Any large appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers, fridges and
freezers which require moving need to be pulled out before the engineer’s visit or have access to the plug.
  • We accept no liability for damage to the flooring or the surrounds if appliances are not pulled out and our engineers are required to do so
  • If deemed unsafe our engineers reserve the right not to remove the appliance for the purpose of testing
  • Make sure any animals, children are safe and adequately supervised during the visit to maintain the safety of the engineer and others. Our engineers reserve the right to decline the survey if they deem the surroundings unsafe to do so
  • Use of multiple and unnecessary extension leads can be deemed unsafe and a fire hazard. Where possible they need to be removed prior to our visit
  • If there are any damages to the portable electrical appliances, please let the electrician know in advance so that they can take the necessary precautions.
  • Advise the PAT tester of any recent changes to the appliances such as the installation of a new plug or a new lead.
  • If there is any medical equipment that requires power, please let the electrician know in advance so that they can take the necessary precautions.
